Thanks in part to Sean’s leadership, New York’s property tax cap is permanent, and major tax cuts have been enacted for hard-working, middle-class families – creating the lowest rates in nearly 70 years. Sean has also fought to cut taxes for local small businesses to create more high-paying jobs that will move the economy forward. Throughout his time representing Western New York, Sean has worked to pass the Child Victims Act, the Women’s Justice Agenda, and smart ideas to tackle the opioid epidemic.
As a state legislator, Sean has worked tirelessly to represent our region in Albany and deliver real results for families in Western New York:
- Fought to make sure that upstate infrastructure projects were funded at the same level as downstate projects in the state budget
- Passed a historic broadband mapping initiative and secured nearly $1.5 billion to expand broadband coverage across New York
- Created a plan to address Buffalo’s housing affordability crisis and secured state funding to implement it
- Voted to increase the minimum wage to $16 for workers across Upstate New York
- Fought to make Paid Family Leave a reality in New York State and secured billions to expand the availability of child care
- Worked for years to ensure that every New Yorker has access to high-quality, affordable healthcare
- Provided property tax relief and tax cuts for the middle class in the wake of the pandemic and the ensuing financial instability
- Secured billions in increased education aid to help school districts hire more teachers, lower class sizes, and make investments in arts, music, and sports
As the issue of crime and gun violence has made headlines here in New York and around the nation, Sean Ryan has worked to secure resources for law enforcement and strengthen our laws to keep New Yorkers safe:
- Secured over $1 billion in operational support and capital funding for the state police in the most recent state budget
- Helped to support the expansion of gun violence prevention programs by voting to provide them with $347 million in the most recent state budget
- Voted to strengthen our laws to help prosecute gun crimes, keep repeat offenders off the streets, ensure bail is set for those who cause serious harm, and hold people who commit hate crimes accountable
- Passed the toughest gun safety laws in the nation to ban assault weapons, ensure permits and background checks for semi-automatic rifles, enact a red flag law and boost extreme risk protection orders, ban ghost guns and large capacity magazines, and stop would-be criminals from buying body armor
- Passed laws to hold social media companies accountable for hateful and violent conduct on their platforms, and create a task force on social media and violent extremism to help root out white supremacist violence
In the State Senate, Sean will continue to work every day to:
- Lower taxes for seniors and hard-working, middle-class families
- Keep our communities safe
- Invest in rebuilding Western New York’s infrastructure to create good-paying jobs
- Lower healthcare costs to ensure no family goes bankrupt due to medical bills
- Build on New York’s Paid Family Leave program to ensure affordable childcare for every family
- Protect renters from lead and other hazards found in old houses
